Our sketch comedy program is designed to allow students to take their interesting and fun ideas, write them out, and share them with the world. Using improvisation as a tool for heightening and polishing sketches, students create one-of-a-kind stories and characters.

Sketch for Stage

Level 1: Introduction to Sketch Writing & Performance
7 Week Course | $275 | Must be enrolled in Improv Level 3+ or Teacher Approval

This course will introduce the fundamentals of writing with an end result of writing a sketch monologue for the stage. Through a series of writing exercises, students will use characters, environment and relationships to develop comedic sketches. Completion of weekly assignments inside and outside of class will develop good writing habits for students. Level 1 culminates with a showcase of students’ monologues.

Level 2: The Writers’ Room
7 Week Course | $275 | Sketch 1 Required

In this course, students learn the dynamics of being part of a writers‘ room as you write sketches both on your own and as a group. You’ll be writing multiple sketches each week, and continuing to build on the foundations of idea generating and use of the comedic tools learned in Sketch 1. There will also be a focus on using improv to generate sketch ideas. This level culminates in two performances of selected written sketches.

Level 3: Writing a Revue
7 Week Course | $290 | Sketch 2 and Audition for the Course

In this class, you will work in a writer’s room style to develop a full length, cohesive sketch comedy revue that will run for four weeks on the DCH stage. The cast will write and perform the entire show as a group, under the direction of the instructor.  This level culminates with a run of four performances in a sketch revue at Dallas Comedy House.

Sketch for Screen

Level 1: Writing & Producing for Screen
8 Week Course | $290 | Sketch for Stage Level 2 Required

This course will introduce the fundamentals of writing and film production. Students will learn basic elements of putting together a sketch for screen – from concept to shooting and editing a final piece. Students will serve as writers, producers, and crew for one another’s projects, resulting in four separate digital shorts which will be promoted online through Dallas Comedy House.

Level 2: Creating a Digital Series
8 Week Course | $300 | Sketch for Screen Level 1 and Teacher Recommendation Required

In Sketch For Screen 2, students will learn how to develop rich characters. As a class, you will write, produce, and shoot four episodes of a digital series, which will be promoted and advertised through Dallas Comedy House. You will continue to build on the foundations of writing and production learned throughout the sketch program.

Level 3: From Idea to Festival
8 Week Course | $350 | Sketch for Screen Level 2 and Teacher Invitation Required
In Sketch for Screen 3, students prepare a project for submission to three film festivals. Students pick which track they wish to pursue at the end of Level 2 and teams are assembled by the instructor. The two tracks available are listed below:

  • Packaging and Selling a TV Series: In a team of four, students work to create and package a television series for sale and festival submission.
  • Writing & Producing a Comedic Short: In a team of four, students work to write, produce, and edit a comedic short for submission to film festivals across the country.
